This week CoinBurp was lucky enough to be joined by the fantastic David Iain Brown, an abstract painter and NFT artist that is making some serious waves in the community.
David, thank you for taking the time to do this interview.
It’s fantastic to see that the future owner of your stunning “Walk along the lake” piece will also receive the physical copy also. How did you first get into creating digital art?
Initially, I was using my iPad to help further develop/ finish my paintings. I stumbled upon clubhouse and then fell down the NFT rabbit hole. Now fast forward 7 weeks and I’m deep in the space and the community.
Your work consists of a wide range of colourful abstract digital pieces. Available on OpenSea, Rarible and Foundation.
What are your inspirations? This could be artists (NFT or non-NFTs), TV shows, music, or any random thing on the internet!
I’m inspired by my surroundings, the world around me, combinations of colours I see on a daily basis. There are too many artists for me to list that inspire me both in the NFT space and physical art world. All I have to say is the NFT community is the most accepting community i have found in my 10 years of being in the art world. Music, I love all types it just depends on my current mood and the weather in Scotland. TV shows are also very random I love anime, Bob’s Burgers, Rick & Morty to It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia to murder documentaries on Netflix. Very, very random taste in music and programs.
What does your work aim to say?
I have always been interested in colour and how one colour can sit next to or on top of one another. As a printmaker, I’m interested in how I can build layers of history within my work. I want the viewer to connect to this and be drawn into looking at the work closely and from afar. The colours tend to trigger memories or emotions to previous viewers so I want to teleport a person to a time or place in their own history.
What is your work process from idea to finish?
The NFT starts as a photo of my physical painting, I deconstruct the painting in Procreate to rebuild it back up using different colours and multiple layers, duplication of layers, and keep building up this process while adding elements of text, textures and glitched effects to build up a completely new aesthetic from my physical piece.
Cryptocurrencies and NFT have been dominating the world news for the past year thanks to the meteoric rise of Bitcoin, Cryptopunks, and of course, the famous Beeple $69M NFT purchase. What are your honest thoughts on the cryptocurrency and NFT space right now?
I have absolutely been amazed by the community of the NFT space, I don’t know too much about cryptocurrency but am slowly learning each and every day. I love the support and how willing artists are to help each other or point you in the right direction.
What are your other passions besides creating art?
I used to garden with my grandfather every summer until covid happened so I haven’t done that in a long time. I also love the gym. I feel for me this is a place I can destress and clear my mind.
This is something CoinBurp asks new starters in the company as part of their Q&A interviews that get posted on the blog, but the answers are always great! What TV show or movie are you ashamed to admit you love?
I do love classic Disney movies as these are the movies I grew up watching and loving. I also love chick flicks like white chicks, bridesmaids but the list goes on.
Thank you for taking the time to answer these questions. The CoinBurp team can’t wait to see you grow as an artist!
Post some links to where people can find your artwork and social media accounts. Also, feel free to shout out anything else you wish.
